This amazing hiking trail has over 125 steps that make tackling the steeper grades easy. Access to the stream at two different sections of the trail lets you emerge yourself in the cool mountain stream water as you navigate around the property.

Charolette Latin School has an amazing running program. We have worked on these trails periodically over the past 15 years. Recent construction required some reroutes on this spectacular course. Gravel topped with stone screenings compacted makes for a fast yet soft surface. Good luck to the CC team this year!

Rail repair, new rock steps , removing large roots and trail trim work on High Falls trail. This 1.5 mile out and back trail is rugged but the waterfall at the bottom is amazing!

3/4 mile hiking trail design on private property. These trail are broken down into 3 segments. Each segment has a different feel as the trail weaves around the property. These trail will be built around the current UTV trails already in place.

1/2 mile design of MTB trail in Asheville, N.C. This trail will have berms and rock gardens. Short, but sweet and just out the back door!

The Bracken Preserve’s new trail system adds nearly two miles, marking the culmination of a project more than five years in the making. Long Cane Trails was first approached by the City of Brevard in 2021 to redesign the steep section beyond the parking lot. As planning progressed, Conserving Carolinas joined the effort, purchasing additional property that allowed the city to expand the system around Waterford Place. Following years of planning and land acquisition, I worked closely with Howard Granat with the Parks and Recreation Department to develop the vision for this new two-mile system. Once the design was finalized, the community, individual donors, and partner organizations stepped up to secure the necessary funding. After a competitive bidding process by 2 other Professional Trail-builders, the City of Brevard awarded Long Cane Trails the construction contract. While there were initial discussions regarding berms and single track sections for the mountain bike trail, we chose a design and build that serves the broader community. Recognizing that the majority of Bracken Preserve visitors are hikers, runners, and families, our mission was to create a trail that is welcoming for walkers while remaining engaging for beginner and intermediate mountain bikers. The project was completed using a hybrid construction model. Long Cane Trails managed the professional machine work and technical construction, while Pisgah Area SORBA led an incredible volunteer effort. Volunteers cleared debris, removed roots, and performed finishing work , allowing our team to focus on crafting sustainable, high-quality trails. This hybrid approach also proved highly cost-effective. With over $15,000 in volunteer labor and approximately $35,000 in design/ build donations from Long Cane Trails, the City of Brevard saved over $50,000. It is inspiring to see what a community can achieve through a shared vision. Thank you to the City of Brevard, Conserving Carolinas, Howard Granate, Pisgah Area SORBA, and all the donors and volunteers who made this possible.  

1/2 mile hiking trail on private property in Asheville, N.C. This trail connects a new cottage to a lower road where the owners can continue back to their new home.

Signage is an important component of any trail system. Markers keep you on path which gives you a sense of confidence as you travel the Trail. Emergency markers help you to know exactly where you’re at on the trail . Trailhead signs let you know what trail you’re on as well as the rating of this trail. #valleybearfarms just got a complete signage system on their trails- go check it out!

Hand built trails have their place. This unique landscape had lots of water moving through it so low impact dirt moving was necessary. Turns in the trail, undulating the trail and steps weave through the forest after the perfect location of the trail was placed. A hand built trail really allows you to get more intimate with nature.

Zen Garden phase 4 involved 54 rock steps from a garden area to connect to the newly created bench in phase 3. This trail wraps between large boulders and under rhododendron trees. Handrails were installed for a positive grip going up and down the trail.

1.5 miles of flow trail through the palmetto trees. Using rock in places to harden the trail surface this trail brings the rollers to lower S.C. This area has trails but none built with flow. Built on private property for kids that have found themselves with Mountain Biking.

6 mile trail assessment on the High Hickory trail system. These trails were completed 6 years ago and needed some repairs after Helene. Prescription included some tread work, steps, trees to cut out and lots of brush work. Trails are ever changing as the nature and weather shapes its surroundings. Trail Maintenance is an essential component of any trail system.

1 more mile of trail to hidden waterfall added to master plan at Lake Toxaway private estate.

Phase 10 at Falling Creek Camp brought a new skills course and some berms to the old trails. This skills course was built for beginner riders to practice some MTB moves before they hit the trails. The educational component of these features are important for kids to build confidence.

#valleybearfarms phase 2 complete. This adds 3 miles to the system now making 6 miles of trail! The new Yellow trail highlights the rocky areas of the property and serves as the only difficult trail on the property. From trails, disc golf, garden, pond and steam room- this place has it all. The accommodations are off the chart! Trails are open to bikes and hiking. Go check out one of the best glamping spots in WNC!

1.5 mile running cross country loop designed for a private school just outside the Charolette area. This loop will concentrate on a smooth surface and root free trail system. Minimal elevation grades with a 5 foot wide trail will allow runners to clock their best times on this outdoor track.

Spring trail tune up on some older trails we built a few years ago. Every trail needs some special attention from time to time. This 2.5 mile trail system had a few danger trees overhanging and across the trail. Leaves and some exposed roots were removed. Almost a mile of newly designed hiking trail on steep slopes. Off the main loop are 3 side trails. Two take you to the stream and one will take you to a lookout platform overlooking the waterfall. 1/3 mile garden trail. The trail was designed and built for the owner to access the steeper terrain to plant gardens and a variety of plants along the trail side. The trail will serve as a walking path and access to the plants and gardens for maintenance . The trail was split into two sections of the property. Locust stairs to lessen the grade in sections and 4 benches were added along side the trail. Can’t wait to see this trail next Spring!

1/2 mile trail designed on private property. This trail was designed to navigate the gardens that will be planted around the house.

Just under a mile of hiking/ biking trail designed for private owner in Waynesville, N.C. Lots of lines through Hugh boulders. Another great adventure just out the back door!

One last bridge at #pearsonsfalls . This 15 footer serves as a dry crossing for the small stream that feeds to the main creek. Opening again soon, go check it out!

#Valleybearfarms is a special place. Nestled in a remote area between Brevard, N.C. and the Blue Ridge Parkway, this Luxury Glamping Resort offers 6 miles of trails! These are open to hiking and Mountain biking with your stay at this amazing place. More amenities include disc golf, Pickleball, Bocce Ball and a Sauna . Phase one was completed a while back and we are currently on phase 2. Currently there are 3 miles of trails. One leads to an amazing waterfall! Photos below. Almost 2 miles of new biking/ hiking trails on private property. This network has 4 loops that stack on top of themselves from the bottom to the top. This design offers many loop options. With almost 400 feet of elevation gain, options are nice!

Phase 2 will bring another lookout deck and new trails to the other side of the waterfall. This little network of trails is private and offers users almost a half mile total of trails to explore.

9 months of work produced an amazing new path to #pearsonfalls. Hurricane Helene completely changed the route of the stream and overall landscape of this area. The new trail is engineered with minimal steps to.make the experience easier

1/2 mile UTV trail designed on private property in Old Fort, N.C. With most of the acreage clear cut, we found the woods around the border and it all lined up for a great level 5 foot wide meandering journey around the property! The yellow trail gives the owner access to the lower field that was not previously accessible due to the steep slopes. This truly is an example of utilizing your property to its full potential.

1.5 miles of MTB trail designed in Johns Island, S.C. on private property. Through the Spanish Moss we have weaved an amazing route that anchors to large Cypress trees and Cinnamon ferns. Overlooking marsh areas full of wildlife, this trail will be an amazing journey through the Low Countries terrain.

Switch back turn rebuild due to uprooted tree taking the entire corner out. Harvesting rock for the crib wall and dirt from the fallen trees rootball made for a rock solid turn!

1.5 miles of new trail designed for hiking/ biking for Private owner in Asheville, N.C. This connection will allow owner access to a residential street that ends up at the office. Riding to and from work using the new trail system everyday is a great way to stay fit and reduce your footprint.

Phase 2 on this project was challenging but fulfilling to build. 2 new miles of hiking and UTV trails on private property. These trails traverse through lush forest next to a creek where you pop out next to a high waterfall. New trails on just purchased land makes the property that much better. 65 locust steps were needed on the steep sections of this trail system.

1.6 miles of new trail designed on private property. This stacked loop trail system connects the owners with another trail system on top of their property. Designed mostly for mountain bikes but hiking and ATV access also.

Fall clean up on 6 mile private trail system. Trees had fallen across trails and grass in areas grew to waist high. Tuned up and ready to go over the winter!

Phase 3 at the Zen Garden. We love projects like these that let us show our landscaping skills while controlling water on the property. This phase also added a small trail that goes over a large rock where we placed a bench angled for sunsets. It’s very cool blending natural products to make art.

Good things take time. After one year we are very pleased with the outcome of the trail system at #stjohninthewildernesschurch .From natural surface trails to hardened gravel trails, this historic passage trail takes users back in time. Along the trail we made custom signage to highlight areas of interest. An outdoor classroom and backed benches were made by using wood from the grounds of the Church. The #pisgahmapcompany made a fantastic map to help users navigating the trails. These trails are open to the public for biking and hiking. Total length is just over 1 mile.

1.5 mile backyard flow trail. Lots of berms and jumps on 4 trails that start out of the front door and end at the bottom of the property near a creek. A graveled road will be used to get back to the top of the 4 downhill runs. Each trail is a bit different with one trail using an old ditch like a skateboard half pipe as it travels downhill.

Phase one on private property was about a 1/2 mile total with a hiking trail and UTV trail. The UTV trail was built where the future driveway would go. This leads to the future house site. From there the hiking trail drops off through small streams, near waterfalls and the headwaters of a creek. So cool to see the trails go in before the house!

Reroute on Copper Ridge trail. This is part of the Fonta Flora trail also. Helene damage was patched but needed a new section of trail for a permanent fix. The goal was to take a well know trail and add this section in with seamless transitions as Mountain Bikes carry lots of speed through this section. Mission complete!

1/2 mile new hiking/ biking trail on private property. Only 10 minutes from downtown Asheville, this trail system circles the future homesite . Designed to be ridden right out the garage door! Sections of the trail parallel a stream while other sections go through dense hardwood areas.

Summer can be a burden for a trail owner. Some areas get overgrown and trees fall across the trails. These particular trails seem to need maintaining about every 2 years This clean up was on trails built 4 years ago.

Phase 3 on backyard trail in Brevard, NC. This completes the loop in the backyard that goes over a few storm wash areas where the boardwalks were installed. Surrounded by bamboo, this trail feels like your walking through a jungle!

High winds can be a trail owners worst nightmare. 10 trees fell across the trail we built 4 years ago. The owner was not able to get the 10 trees out to enjoy the trail so we helped.

Half mile Hybrid build done in June of 2024. We waited to post this project to show how hybrid projects finally look like. This is when we do the heavy lifting and the customer does the small touches and landscaping on the trail. The idea is to work with the customer to educate them on the techniques of building / maintaining a trail as well as meeting budget constraints. After one year you can see the trail has become more narrow from the ferns. This was designed as a walk/ bike trail. We love being able to work with our customers in this way!

Just over 2 miles of hiking trail on Private Property. What a great place for the kids to grow up under the trees- in your back yard! Some of the trails are next to streams and the forest is loaded with different ferns and plant life. This trail system allows users to hike through different areas of Transylvania County’s Temperate Rainforest.

1/8 mile nature trail designed in Boone, N.C. This trail will offer garden areas, reflection space as well as a butterfly and honey bee area. Surrounded by Rhododendron and blooming flowers already, this trail will be magical!

Can’t wait to build trails to these private waterfalls! 2 miles of new trail on the way!

1/4 mile hiking trail on private property. Crossing a stream a couple times allows the trail to parallel the water for a section. Trail construction and landscaping at its best!

Helene cleanup continues. This project focused on cutting out trees across the trail, washed out stream crossings and some tread work. The trail building material for the wet crossings were harvested from the property. Our smallest excavator was needed to navigate this 2 foot wide path- we could have given at trail building workshop on proper excavator operation on this job! It was nice to bring the trail system back to this private property.

1.1miles of flow downhill trails on private property. 4 downhill runs end in one place where an old road will take you back to the top. Jumps, berms, tabletops and rollers will be placed on each trail.

Phase 3 completes another 2.5 miles for a total of 6.2 miles of hiking and MTB trails! Phase 3 negotiated large boulders to craft the path along the French Broad River. With 1600’ elevation change between the low point and high point. This trail system takes you through many different forested areas. This sustainable trail design and build took us to the edge a few times but good planning goes a long way.

2 miles of hiking trails designed in Brevard N.C. Trail building plans include a few stream crossings and multiple different trail loop options. Connecting just out the back door of the house, this family will be on the trails daily.

Storm clean up after Hurricane Helene. Lots of tree root balls across trail. Tread was in need of repair in places also. We added a jump over a downed tree for the owner to have an optional boost on the trail!

1/8 mile zen hiking trail -phase 2. This nature park is located on a private residence and takes advantage of the surrounding natural features that we were able to use as trail building features. This was a very fun project for our crew also as we got to engage some new trail building techniques on some of the benches.

Lovely 3/4 mile hiking trail in Tryon, N.C. Circling the house this trail also drops to another recreation area where concerts, and other events take place. The trail snakes under an amazing rock foundation that serves as a parking area for the home. A few steps throughout the trail makes the hike an easy stroll in the woods.

The Foothills Trail is from S.C. Thru N.C. and finally ending at Oconee State Park in GA. Covering 77 miles and many mountains, this trail is a legendary hiking passage. We assessed 42 miles of the trail for Duke Energy that currently manages the land and entire trail system. This work was done to access the condition of the trail system. Not much will change for the public but there is a new virtual locator app for the entire length of the trail!

4.75 miles designed on this amazing private property that has waterfalls everywhere! All the trails were designed for UTVs with short hiking trails to the Falls and overlooks. The trail system will allow access around this wonderful property through areas that can not be built on but great for trails. Being designed within a Conservation Easement assures these trails will be around a long  time.

Bracken Preserve got a small upgrade at the trailhead. The locust lasted 13 years but the rock will last forever! There is a before picture added below for comparison.

Hurricane Helene clean up on approximately 10 miles of trail. This private property offers such a variety of terrain and is one of my favorite places to ride. From rhododendron to large pine and oak forest then into stunning open fields.

4 miles of amazing MTB trail completes phases 1 and 2. We have been working on this project since spring. Such a variety of terrain this trail system travels through on its way around the borders of this extensive property along the French Broad River. Two more miles in phase 3 are in the works!

With a couple service roads already in place, we connected everything for a total of 2 miles of trail! These trails were designed and will be built for hikers that enjoy easy footing in rugged terrain. The system was designed to offer loops within a larger loop creating options for the users. The most amazing part of the trail system are the 3 types of Forest the trail’s meaner through. Upstate SC is a special place!

1 mile mixed trail use design at St. John in the Wilderness. Half was designed as a flat wide graveled trail while the other half uses the private property for mountain biking and hiking trails! These trails also connect the local community to the church.

Brevard Elementary School has a new 1/2 mile hiking/biking course on campus! We were able to use the wooded area behind the school to achieve this great loop. This trail is open to the public and dogs must be on a leash. Getting kids under trees on a trail is a great thing.

3/4 mile walking trail design for Duke Energy Corporation. This trail will be bringing a chance to get under the trees near a local recreation park and neighborhood.

1/4 mile hiking trail designed for Duke Energy Corporation. This trail will be used to access a river put in for small boats. Hikers can also enjoy a short walk to the river and along the stream.

Almost a 1/2 mile hiking trail on private property. This trail was so cool! So many different forest systems on such a small trail system. This VRBO now has a great outdoor experience waiting just outside the door!

2.5 miles of private hiking trails in Brevard NC. Natural rock bridge with lots of rhododendron tunnels.

1 mile hiking trail design in exclusive private neighborhood. This addition will give owners a chance to walk in the woods along a creek and out of the roads. Small Parking lot will be added as well as interpretive signage along the trail.

Tuxedo Falls, a 50-acre boutique lodging and land conservation project located in the North Carolina mountains now has 2 miles of hiking trails around the 2 creeks within the property! Numerous waterfalls and rhododendron tunnels.

3 miles of flowing MTB trails on private land. Phase 2 will yield  2 more miles. Lush ferns, tall Oaks, brown dirt, black dirt  and an array of different rocks to play with on this canvas!    

2 miles of hiking trails split into two 1 mile loops on private property. This trail will pass under tall old growth trees and a few large rocks. With a setting atop the mountain, the views are amazing from the trail also. Half of the trails are along a stream!

   

5 miles of mountain bike and hike trails on private property. Designed to be intermediate level at most and for kids.

2.5 miles of kid friendly MTB trails right from the door! Fun rolling terrain let us create a rollercoaster of a ride for these guys. The trail always seems to give you momentum and is a blast in both directions!

1 mile hiking trail on private property with a couple bridges. This property now is quite the adventures paradise with the house located on the lake with trails! This was another Hybrid project where the owner helps prep the trail for the machines and then helps to finish the trail. This technique teaches the client what it takes to build and later maintain the trail while helping get the trails overall cost closer to their desired level.

These lucky landowners now have 2 miles of  MTB Flow trail in their back yard! The parents and kids will make many memories on these trails. With the many drainages we crossed on this property it allowed for a pump track feel in sections. This trail is very easy at low speeds but can be demanding at high speeds.

1.5 miles of new MTB trail cornering  DuPont State Forest at Green River Preserve Camp. Mild grades up and down for the kids to enjoy this summer!

Private property hiking trail from house to French Broad River.  This was a technical design around rocks in steep terrain at times. We installed 32 steps to break the grade a bit as the trail approached the river. Total trail length was 1 mile with a 300 foot elevation drop from the house to the river. We love connecting owners to these beautiful areas on their property!

New 1/2 mile hiking trail to treehouse overlook. This hike is a great addition that allows guest to experience nature within minutes from their cabin!

Our 8 month project comes to an end. What a cool project for a cutting edge company! A 2.5 mile trail system connects one facility to another. This includes 4 bridges and 3 boardwalks. 3 kiosk and two custom gates at major intersections. This 6 foot wide trail offers emergency access via UTV for the local fire department. The trail was intended for walking and biking during lunch hours for SEW Eurodrives employees. Studies show by engaging exercise during lunch hours, more production can be achieved. This model has been applied mostly in the Western part of the United States. SEW Eurodrive is ahead of their time by offering Healthy lifestyles options to their employees. Look for more of this in the future.

1.35 mile design on some of the gnarliest terrain we’ve seen! Can’t wait to build this Portage trail for boats on a remote island in S.C.

The taller the bamboo grows, the lower it bends~Japanese proverb Phase 2 of the backyard Zen Forest hiking trail complete. Saving the best for last!

Phase 2 on this backyard hiking trail included 2 benches and lots of steps to make the footing perfect.

We have just completed 3 miles of proposed hiking trail in the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Golden Valley, NC.  Steeper grades are rewarded with breathtaking views, a cave and an old moonshine site!

This is the first mile of 14 planned for the exclusive development in Cashiers call High Hampton. Starting on the lower land and we will be working our way to the top of the 2 mountains in conservation in 2021. Can’t wait to play more here!

Connector trail of 1000 feet at Southern Wesleyan University. This new trail connects the original trails around the new parking lot to create a continuous flow on these campus trails. Delivering a slab of broken sidewalk to use as a base for a bike stand.

Had some great terrain to design 2 miles of hiking trail on private property. This trail is going to be awesome!

Rework on holes 4-10 on the Frisbee golf course. Main goal was to link users from the tee box to the next hole and make the “greenway,” off the tee box, more of a flat common trail until the point where users break off the main path.

1/2 mile kids flow MTB loop. Beginner trail to teach cornering, pumping over hills and gears on your bike. Kids and bikes are so cool!

Reworking trails for summer camp. After 11 years we finally saw areas that needed to be brought back to the level of the young campers.

Construction of 8 miles of trail, creating two small inner loops and a connector trail to Pisgah National Forest. This has provided the city with a great, accessible trail for the town as well as allowed people to connect with the Fish Hatchery in the national forest. Working with community volunteers to corridor clear and finish the trail allowed the city to save on funding and also allowed residents to own a part of the unique trail system.

Layout and design ONLY. Master Plan consisting of 2.5 miles of cross country style trail (to include wooden features such as corkscrews, teeter-totters, jump ramps and berms), skills course, expert and intermediate downhill course, dual slalom course, pump track and an expert and intermediate downhill jump course. The Aska Trails Area is a 17-mile hiking-mountain biking trail system in the National Forest near Deep Gap on Aska Road in Blue Ridge, GA. Trails range from 1 to 5.5 miles and vary in difficulty. The system utilizes hand dug tread way and old logging roads. Trails climb to 3,200 feet with views of mountain ridges and descend to the shores of Lake Blue Ridge. A hiker can expect to hike through forested areas with mature hardwoods and thickets of mountain laurel and rhododendron. During the early months of 2010, we laid and designed trail.

Additional 12 miles built consisting of two northern trails- Big Rock (4 m) and Tower (3.8 m). Nestled in the Long Cane Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest, FATS is the crown jewel of the CSRA trails, and for good reason. FATS has something for everyone. Very few technical features make FATS a great place to get beginners hooked on the sport, and the excellent flow, pump track like feel, and high speed sections combined with lots of mileage keeps bringing the seasoned riders back for more time and time again.

Construction of 4 miles of new trail with rolling hills allowing for plenty of jumps and short, grunt uphill sections. Lots of narrow hand-benched singletrack. Built on land bordering the Buncombe County Landfill, Long Cane Trails did an excellent job of hiding that fact and accenting the trail with beautiful overlooks of the French Broad River. This was run as a hybrid project in that volunteers were responsible for doing a lot of the pre and post machine work.

25 Miles of trails with swooping turns and rolling hills through hardwood and pine forest of Sumter National Forest. Accessibility for the beginner to the technically advanced. Plenty of speed and jumps around every corner for those seeking a thrill. Consisting of four southern loops- Great Wall (7.5 m), Skinny Loop (6 m), Brown Wave (5.8 m) and Deep Step (5 m). Nestled in the Long Cane Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest, FATS is the crown jewel of the CSRA trails, and for good reason. FATS has something for everyone. Just outside metropolitan Charlotte, NC sits the Anne Springs Close Greenway, a 25 mile trail system with separate trails for biking, equestrian and hiking. Long Cane Trails redesigned the entire mountain bike section and constructed three miles of re-routes.

Along the shores of Lake Whelchel and Cherokee Creek in Gaffney, LCT constructed the first purpose built section of the Overmountain Trail. The 3 mile section contains extensive rock and cedar cribbing as well as full bench construction on steep side slope.

LCT has taken on three different projects of various scopes in the Long Cane District of Sumter National Forest. The Wine Creek Trail Project was to rebuild or repair fourteen bridges on a five mile mountain biking/hiking trail in McCormick County. Railings were repositioned to allow bikers easier access. The Long Cane Horse Trail has had 10+ miles redesigned and reconstructed by Long Cane Trails. The Horn Creek Trail also had a redesign by LCT.

Hickory Knob State Park is where LCT truly cut its teeth. Here, LCT worked with Tony Boone of Arrowhead Trails to design a trail system within the park. The trail consisted of various sections targeting different ability levels of off road cycling. The Lakeview Loop was a seven mile trail, consisting of 6 mile of trail for serious riders near the lake and another mile of easy trail, built entirely by hand over a six month span. This trail winds its way onto a dozen fingers stretching out into Lake Thurmond. The next two trails built at Hickory Knob State Park were built using the Toro Dingo. The Beaver Run Trail built was an easy 2.5 mile path that connects the lodge to the pro shops and skeet range. The Turkey Ridge Loop is accessible from the Lakeview Loop, and although it is only 1.8 miles long it offers the longest climb in the area.

Baker Creek State Park was the first construction project undertaken by LCT. Here we took the principles learned from Tony Boone of Arrowhead Trails to re-design and then build close to three miles of trail within an existing trail system. Our primary goals were to remove unsustainable sections and to improve the flow of this popular mountain bike trail. Through word of mouth and reading reviews of this trail on mtbr.com, it was a success. LCT secured $20,000 in Recreational Trail Grant funds to Baker Creek in 2002-2003.
